The people behind the process: Jenay Wagenaar
At Hillebrand Gori, logistics is more than just moving wine, beer and spirits - it's about nurturing talent, fostering a community spirit and creating a legacy. As a company of DHL, our shared purpose is connecting people and improving lives. Jenay Wagenaar, our HR Business Partner in South Africa, plays a crucial role in making this purpose a reality. Her dedication to our employees and commitment to developing local skills in the beverage logistics , make her a vital part of our journey. This is her story.
The challenge: building talent in a unique industry
In South Africa, Hillebrand Gori holds a substantial market share in the logistics of wine, beer and spirits. “The level of expertise and supply chain training our employees have is specialized and cannot be found or taught anywhere else in the region of Cape Town” says Jenay. Yet, South Africa’s high unemployment rate, combined with an industry skills gap, makes it challenging to find and retain new talent with the necessary expertise.
With South Africa’s legislation requiring companies to invest 3% of their Net Profit After Tax (NPAT) into training individuals from disadvantaged communities, Jenay and the HR team saw an opportunity to make a real impact. Not only could Hillebrand Gori comply with these mandates, but we could also build a sustainable pipeline of top talent and provide career paths that many would never have otherwise.
The solution: strategic internships and supply chain training
Jenay and the HR team developed an internship program that has become a model of success and sustainability. This initiative provides a unique path for students who may have originally overlooked the potential in international logistics. The program allows them to earn a formal qualification in global freight forwarding and supply chain training. It’s covered over a 12–18 month period, gaining hands-on experience that prepares them for long-term careers.
This program also meets the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), requirements from the South African Association of Freight Forwarders ( SAAFF) and the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA), providing an accredited, respected qualification that is unique to Hillebrand Gori. The skills learned in our program are invaluable, as the intricacies of shipping alcoholic beverages worldwide are not available at any local institution.
The results: transforming lives and communities
Jenay’s initiatives have led to extraordinary results:
99% retention rate: Interns who complete Jenay’s training program stay on as valued employees, contributing to a retention rate that is nearly unmatched in the industry. The program not only helps individuals build careers but also creates a loyal, skilled workforce that strengthens the entire Hillebrand Gori business.
High-quality, exclusive training: The skills taught in wine, beer and spirits logistics are unparalleled, positioning our graduates as top talent in the logistics community. This program has virtually transformed Hillebrand Gori into a supply chain training ground, with our expertise being recognized and respected across the industry.
Positive community impact: By providing disadvantaged students with a solid, marketable qualification, Hillebrand Gori has helped to reduce unemployment for our graduates to 0%, in a country where overall unemployment hovers around 33%. This transformative opportunity makes a lasting impact not just on individuals but on their families and communities.
Improved gender and demographic balance: Jenay’s program has also enabled us to exceed gender and demographic equality targets, providing access and opportunity to those who might otherwise be excluded from the industry.
It’s people like Jenay that help us be an "Employer of Choice" for the local community and logistics industry.
