Central America	Panama	Panama Canal – Transit Restrictions	4 September 2026 – The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has introduced operational restrictions in response to lower rainfall and reservoir levels associated with the current El Niño weather pattern. Vessel transits continue, but available capacity is gradually being reduced and transit allocation rules are becoming more restrictive. Measures include fewer daily transit slots for Panamax and Neo-Panamax vessels, tighter controls on booking changes and vessel substitutions, longer cancellation notice requirements and increased emphasis on schedule adherence. Carriers are expected to adapt their networks as conditions develop, which could affect waiting times, schedule reliability, freight rates and priority or other additional charges. The key factor to watch remains the water level in Gatun Lake, which determines how many vessel transits the canal can support. The situation may become more constrained approaching the January to March 2027 dry season, although future rainfall could ease some of the pressure.
